New Contest!

NOTE:  Remember – to qualify for the faboo prizes you must comment here on my blog and on Mimie’s at www.mi-spa.com/blog!

I know I’ve been MIA for the past couple of weeks.  My apologies.  Sometimes life just gets in the way.  I have no idea where the month of April has gone – all I know it’s been a busy one!

There’s lots to catch up on, but today I’m focused on announcing the latest blog contest.  I’m partnering with Mimie of Mi-Spa.com for a fun giveaway.

What is mi Spa you ask?  Well, here’s how Mimie describes her business & products:

Derived from the Chinese word for rice, mi™ (pronounced ‘me’) continues the age-old Eastern tradition of incorporating rice-based ingredients in daily beauty rituals. For centuries Asian women utilized rice water and other rice-enriched products to maintain their ageless and flawless porcelain complexion. With an assortment of revitalizing formulas, customers can take advantage of the natural yet simple nutrient-rich alternatives to achieve youthful and soothing results.

mi™ offers more than 40 spellbinding bath and body products. The line’s luxurious indulgence awakens the senses with its intoxicating Asian-inspired scents from sensuous sake to the aromatic tropical scents of dreamy coconut lemongrass and sweetly-refreshing Yuzu. “We created our skin care line with the simplest natural ingredients for restoring tranquility to one’s chaotic lifestyle,” says mi SPA founder Mimie Wong.

I was intrigued by her products and she was kind enough to send me some samples.  The quality is wonderful.  I particularly love her hand and body lotion.  I don’t like strong scents in lotions or ones that leave you feeling greasy – not good when your trying to knit or otherwise work with yarn.  The scent is clean, light and refreshing and the lotion leaves your hands feeling soft and smooth.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Mimie and I thought it would be fun to have a contest to promote our products together and offer a prize package.  From mi Spa, one lucky winner will receive:

The yarn portion of the prize is:

Pretty cool prize, isn’t it?

So, the way to play is as follows, comment here on my blog with a Mother’s Day memory and go over to the mi Spa blog and comment that you are visiting from the WEBS blog and entering the contest.  We’ll pick a random winner over the weekend and announce on Monday.  We’ll get your prize package out to you in time for Mother’s Day.

You don’t have to give the prize away, nor do you yourself need to be a Mom.  The memory can be simple, funny, not so funny, about  your mom, a memory of you as a mom, etc.

So, that’s the latest and greatest from here.  If I’ve missed anything, I’m sure Mimie will let me know!

In the event you are not the winner, Mimie’s prize is available for purchase on her site for $22.50.  Of course, the yarn, pattern and needles from my portion of the prize are available at www.yarn.com anytime :)

Have fun!  I look forward to reading your comments and we’ll be announcing a winner on Monday!

Kathy

P.S.  Mimie will be posting about this on her blog later tonight – she’s West Coast, I’m East Coast and we both have day jobs :)   Please comment on her post about this contest.  For those of you who commented on her most recent post, we’ll count that, but please let her get her post up – just makes it simpler.  Thanks!!!  You guys rock!

Every year my husband and sons take me to the San Francisco Giants game for Mother's Day after we visit the grandmas! It's an awesome day! There's no other way I would rather spend my day. I have all my favorite things with me...my family, my knitting, the California sunshine, and the SF Giants!
  • Marcie
I left my coporate America cubicle job around Mother's Day when I was 5 months pregnant with my first son and just really starting to show. I remember getting cards and a great book of encouraging Scipture from my best friend. A former boss at the time was so encouraging and he said, "well, we knew you were never really at home here." He was very excited. My co-workers were more confident in my ability to mother than I was. It's neat to think that even before we meet our little ones, we are their mommies!

My favorite memory is of visitng my Mom
  • My mama died in her 90s right before Mother's Day and it was decided that services would be held on the Monday following it. Although she was a somewhat stoic lady, she absolutely loved those bright colored Mylar balloons and during her illness when she got one, and it eventually deflated we pinned it up on the wall. So early Mother's Day morning, I went to the store and bought one of each of the many ballons they had for the day, and then went out to the cemetary and let them go. As each one climbed into the sky I said a thank you for all the mothering she'd done for me. Oh and btw, besides the traditional flower blanket, there was also a big bouqet of balloons at her funeral. Some looked askance, but those that knew her, knew it was the right thing to do. I love your podcast and look forward to Saturday mornings so I can get caught up on all the latest happenings. My chicken is still in progress...or perhaps it's just that it's been reincarnated many times as I change yarns :)

Mother's day memory...it's a tradition to take the moms in the family out for a Saturday dinner. Mostly I like surprising mom randomly throughout the year with a few little gifts or random thoughtful activities.

I am a knitting addict. Each stitch brings back memories of my mother, who passed 4 years ago. She was the one who taught me to knit and crochet. Each night, when I settle in to knit, I cover my feet with an afghan she knit as a young bride. It warms my heart.
  • Hi,

  • Every Mother's Day my elementary school had a flower sale. I'm not sure that 50-cent marigolds were my mom's favorites, but she always made us believe that we'd picked the perfect gift for her.
  • My mother's birthday was May 19, always rather close to Mother's Day, so our parents discouraged us from celebrating Mother's Day. One year after I had had my own kids and realized how gratified a mother can be to receive recognition of her motherhood from her kids, I sent my mother a Mother's Day card. By this time, my mother was in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease and sometimes behaved (ahem) idiosyncratically. About a week after I sent her the card, it came back in the mail to me. She had written, "Same to you, Dear" on it and sent it back. I couldn't decided whether to be offended (she sent back my card) or delighted (she recognized the hard work that both of us had put in as mothers). Now it's just a funny and slightly wistful memory of my mother.
  • Alexandra
Not being a mother yet my favorite memory was as a child going to the flower nursery to pick out a new rose bush for my mother and hanging baskets for my grandmothers. I always picked out colors that I thought they would like ( a shade of purple usually since who doesn't like purple in a 6 year old's mind) it is always something that reminds me of spring. Now I knit socks for the mother's in my life.
  • Marilyn
Mother's Day Memory, that's a hard one for me, as my mother died nearly a decade ago, and I am not a mother. Nor a sister, aunt, etc. And although I'm 44, I've got a chonic disabling illness which means it's unlikely that I'll ever be any of the above.

One of my more salient Mother's Day memories was when I was about 12. It was the first year I was old enough to have my own money and go to the store myself, etc. So I brought I beautiful bouquet of roses, because we never had flowers at home and I thought my mother would really like them. The first thing she did was yell at me for spending money on flowers. (This is a true story). This was very upsetting to me. After going into my room for a while I came out and explained to her that if someone gives her a present she should say thank you, and think about the intentions of the giver. And to my shock she said I was right and she was sorry. She'd never said those things to me before. And for the rest of her life, she always acted as if she loved every present I gave her.

Over Mother's Day 2007 my mom was visiting me in Chicago (she's in West Virginia) and we went to an awesome women-only spa together. We went to the sauna, soaked in the hot tub and got massages! It was the first time I felt like a real "adult daughter" who planned a real outing and could pay for it for both of us. No kids yet myself; maybe someday!

Thanks so much for offering wonderful prizes and gathering such lovely stories!

Mothers Day 2006 was my first as a mom. My daughter was less than a month old, the fiber festival was rained out, we had flooding in most of our state and I was so sleep deprived I don't even think I remembered it was mothers day until a year or so later. It is quite the memory.
  • KathyElkins
I remember those sleep-deprived days. I think it's one of the hardest parts about being a new mom.

As Reservists in the Royal Australian Army my twin sons were returning from tour of Duty to our home base in Australia.
My Husband, an Air Traffic Controller, in the Royal Australian Air Force, was called out urgently - to what, I had no idea. After three hours he returned to say, "Well that is the best Mother's Day present you could have had". The RAAF aircraft on which my twins were travelling had caught on fire mid air and had to make an emergency landing at a small unsed ex war time airstrip some 200miles away. I think of that every Mothers Day and mostly every time I see my now 60 year old twins.

As a 'Knit-aholic' I am thrilled to have found such a wonderful source of information and supplies!

A priceless memory of Mother's Day was when I was about 9 years old. I saved my money to buy my mother, grandmother and aunt gifts. I walked to the local five and dime and bought my treasures. You should have seen the look on my grandmother's face when she opened the gift.... alive painted green turtle about the size of a quarter! I cherish those memories since she died 30 years ago this coming fall right after the birth of my son.

Reading these stories brings back so many good memories. Thank you

When I was young, we always celebrated Mother's Day the same way. My father would wake us kids up early and we would leave. He would keep us out of the house all day (museum trips, beach trips, driving for hours whatever). When we returned in the evening, my mother always seems so happy and relaxed.

Hello. My favorite memory of mother's day was the year my husband started the tradition of bringing me breakfast in bed. Our boys were about 1 and 3 and helped to bring the tray of food up to me in bed. They were SO hungry and kept pointing at food on my plate asking if I was going to eat that. They probably ate about half the food on my tray! They were so cute!! The year after that my breakfast was for all 4 of us and we all sat in our bed and ate. It became a very fun tradition. We have done it every year since then and my boys are going to be 19 and 21 this spring. Sadly this will be the first time in all those years where I won't be getting my breakfast in bed : ( My youngest won't be home from college yet and my husband needs to be out of town that weekend. My oldest and I will have breakfast together. Happy Mother's Day everyone!!

I only recently got an iPod (finally) and have been playing catch-up on all your podcasts. That has led me to subscribing to your blog, and that has been so fun.

My memory of Mother's Day is my own as a mother. (I'll try not to be too long-winded.) I am the mother of a 9 yo and 5 yo twins, all girls. 6 years ago, I found out I was pregnant with identical twins and learned that there is a potential complication--twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. I didn't worry about it too much since the odds are small that it will occur in a pregnancy, but the syndrome is serious and can often lead to the demise of both twins if not treated.

On a weekday in April, I went for a 16-wk ultrasound and learned that they were girls, which pushed us to three in that area. But one of the girls was measuring smaller than the other, so they wanted to send me to a perinatologist to have a bigger, more involved u/s.

I went to the medical center on a Friday afternoon in May and learned that the twins were at stage 2/3 of TTTS (out of 5, which is loss of both) and that an intervention needed to take place immediately. At the time, there were only two doctors in the country performing experimental in-utero surgery to laser the connecting blood vessels. My peri contacted the doctor in FL, arrangements were immediately made, and I was scheduled for surgery in Tampa on Monday morning. My husband and I flew down that Sunday morning, which was Mother's Day, and I remember how heartbreaking and yet inspiring it was that that was the day we headed south. It was heartbreaking as we left our 3 year old behind and also worried about the outcome of the surgery. Yet it was inspiring to know that I was doing the absolute best thing possible as a mother to help these little girls.

We beat the odds with the surgery and at 35 wks (in September), I gave birth to 2 beautiful, healthy 6-lb baby girls who are this year wrapping up kindergarten. It was the most memorable Mother's Day possible for me.

Welcome to the blog and our podcast! Having had two uneventful pregnancies I can't imagine what your ordeal must have been like and those of some of the other commenters. Enjoy your Mother's Day!
  • I'm not a mom, but I think my favorite mother's day memory is that one year, my sisters and I made my mom her mother's day gift using popsicle sticks, colored tissues, markers and tape. I think we were mostly making people with these things. Not only did my mom profess her love for these, um, interesting, creations, she's kept them for near on 20 years now.
  • I get Mother's Day cards from my dogs but that's about the only mom's day memory I have since I have no kids.
  • Debbie Tripp
One year I secretly sent a letter to our local paper nominating my mom as Mother of the Year. On Friday before Mother's Day, the newspaper mailed a copy of the letters to all the moms who had been nominated.
Both my mom and I were surprised. I found that letter in her drawer when she died nearly 40 years later.
  • Elizabeth
My memories are of early May being a rolling Mom-party. She always started the month with May wine and strawberries, and then Mother's Day treats came less than a week later, with my birthday in-between. I still can't focus on anything but relaxing and socializing during this week.
  • Jenifer
Two Mother's Day's ago, I was visiting my daughter in CA, I Iive in RI, and my son and daughter in law were living out there at the time. I was sitting on the couch with my 4 year old granddaughter( my daughter's, daughter) and my son handed me a present. My granddaughter wanted to "help" me open my present, so we opened it together. It was a framed picture. I was trying to figure out what it was. Imagine my surprise when I finally looked up at my son with tears in my eyes and said " Is this a sonagram"???!!!! And he said "Yes, we are having a baby"! The baby Bailey is now 18 months and her baby brother is due to be born on or about September 5th! It was a great Mother's day!

That's really special! Enjoy your new addition this fall!
  • Carmen
I don't have a specific Mother's Day in mind, but we've always tried to make the day special for Mom - whether it's taking her out to eat so she doesn't have to cook, making her special treats, or giving her a day of "luxury".
  • HilaryWithOneL
My mother is English and carries the "stiff upper lip" idea to its full extent. She insisted that Mother's Day was invented by the card companies and she wanted nothing to do with it! All six of her children send her cards anyway, and I think now, with all of her kids over 40, she appreciates them, even expects them. :-)

I have one daughter, and whether Mother's Day was invented by the card companies or not, getting cards from her, that she made herself, that tell me I'm the best mom in the world, are one of the joys of motherhood.
  • Melanie PL
I remember the year my daughter gave me "coupons" for free services, like cooking dinner, washing windows, doing laundry. She has her own 2 boys now and what she doesn't know is that I still have the coupons and some day, I know I will need them, and will cash them in!
  • Cute! My best memory is the first card my daughter made for me for mother's day. Not the store-bought stuff from her first couple years. The one she made when she was 3 with hearts and flowers and 'x's for kisses.
  • Susan T
My favorite Mother's Day moment was when I spent a full day knitting with my mom. I gave her a gift of a new Tofutsies sock patten along with Limited Edition yarn. Besides knitting, we shared great conversation and watched "Pride and Prejudice"...the BBC 6 hour or so version from beginning to end. It was a fantastic day for both of us.
  • Joyce
My grandmother called and asked my cousin and I to come to her house the Saturday before Mother's Day. She had over 50 grandchildren so having this special invitation for just the two of us was rare. When we got there, she had two beautiful, simple white vases and we all went out to her beautiful flower garden and picked bouquets of pansies for our Mothers. It had been a very warm spring and they bloomed earlier than usual that year. I loved the time with my Grandma and it made a special memory for my Mom and I too.
  • Bette Stern
When I was a young child, my brothers and I would always try to surprise my mother with flowers on Mother's Day. We would do this while my mother and father were picking out flowers for their mothers (our grandmothers). So, there we were, trying to surprise my mother while she was right there with us. We thought we were doing such a good job and Mom never let on that she knew. It wasn't until years later (when we were adults with children of our own) that Mom reminded us that sometimes when you're a parent you need to pretend for the sake of the children. In order to make Mother's Day great for us (the kids) , Mom had to pretend to be surprised and so thankful for the flowers.
  • RC
My most memorable Mother's Day is the one when my husband had my kids give me the present he picked out, a small bottle of Crown Royal in a velvet pouch. He's the one who would drink it but he thought I would like the cute half-size bottle. I still have it.
  • Shauna Mudd
What lovely prizes. One of my favorite Mother's day memories was the year my family obliged by taking me to a fiber festival. It is not what they would have chosen to do, which made it even more special.
  • We never made breakfast in bed for my mom, mostly because she hates crumbs in the bed. :-) BUT she is from Panama, and there they have their own Panamanian Mother's day... it's in December, if I remember correctly, and the wrath you encounter if you do not remember a Latin mother's special day is incalculable. :) Seriously, though... when I was little my sister and I would make Mother's day cards, and the best part was trying to hide them in our rooms till it was time to give them to her. Also multiple "homemade coupon books" that never got cashed in. :) My favorite, though, was when I strung a bunch of plastic pony beads on some cotton string and made my mom a necklace and bracelet, and I was so thrilled because she wore them to work that night! (She was a lab tech for a while)... now, of course, I suspect she left them in the car, but she remembered to put them on when she came home!! Gotta love mom. Maybe that's why I am still crafty today - lots of early encouragement.
  • Never did the breakfast in bed thing for my mom either - for the exact same reason!
  • Susan
One of my favorite things that we did for my mom for Mother's Day was to give her plants--we'd spend the day at the garden center, picking things out, and then go home and plant. Much longer lasting than a bouquet!
  • Rita
It was hard to pick a favourite memory but one of them is the time my daughter made this elaborate coupon book with all sorts of fun things we could do together and some not so fun for her. She went as far as to put conditions and expiry dates on the not so fun things like she'd wash all the floors but not on the same day I redeemed a vacuuming coupon. Only one coupon could be used at a time etc. It was so much fun reading through all of them. I wanted to redeem one of them months later and she pointed out the small print on the back. The coupon had expired. I had quite the laugh. She decided to honour it anyway but warned me it would be the last time.

Ah! My mom, Angela, is 92 years old and has Alzheimer Disease. She may be in her own world but she is still feisty!

A couple of years ago I made her a tuna salad sandwich and told her not to give any to the dog because it had onions in it. Mom says: "Ooooooh this is sooooooooooo good, what's in it?" I told her: "mayo, dill weed and onions"

Again mom says: "Oooooh this is so good, what's in in it?" Again I answer "mayo, dillweed and onions."

As with all Alzheimers folks, this went on and on and on! :)

I went in the other room and I hear mom say to the dog: "NO! You can't have any! It has mayo, dillweed and onions in it!" then "Oooooooh this is so good, what's in it?"

I was laughing so hard I cried! :)

This same woman, a year earlier, single handedly put together a mail order futon. It was made of steel, had a million parts, screws, etc and weighed a TON. But my 4'10" 85 year old mom put ot together perefectly!

My mother’s day memories: I have 3 great kids that I love to death 2 are married 1 is still looking. My mother’s day memory is a strange one that honors me and my husband. Like I said I raised 3 great kids that love and respect their spouses their in-laws and themselves all that have kids respect and love their children, they love God and treat me with total respect. We were both raised by 2 alcoholics that did not know how to raise kids, and somehow we managed to learn the right way to do stuff and have a happy family I also remember all the great jewelry they used to give me I swear I have huge beads in every color that I wear on Mother’s day . I also take their kids out to get my children huge beads from their kids Payback..
  • Sherri
My favourite mother's day memories are memories from afar. My family lives in Canada, where I grew up, but I moved to the NYC 'burbs (Connecticut now) about 10 years ago. Around the same time, my father and step-mother started building their retirement home on the lake. Several years ago, when they were starting the landscaping for the lake house, I called my favourite florist back home and ordered a rose bush for my stepmother's garden. Every year since them I get her another rose bush for the rose garden. I love to hear how they're doing, what colours are blooming, and how the garden is getting bigger and bigger (my stepsister has been contributing rose bushes to it for special occasions too). I can't be there for Mother's Day, but my step-mom knows I'm thinking about her whenever she sees her rose garden. :)

    Awesome prize Kathy & Mimie!
  • What a lovely tradition! Thanks for sharing.

Taking my 91 year old mother-in-law to watch her son coach her granddaughter's softball game. The look of pure delight on her face and watching her cheer for the team is a mom's day memory I will carry with me forever. :o)
  • Just last Mothers Day I had a great time making fancy French toast for my mother and sister. The recipe is the Brockton Villa's Coast Toast, and it is a bit involved, so we spent a lovely morning in the kitchen drinking coffee and laughing while I shuffled pans and ingredients around.
  • Jeanie
Hello! Every Mother's Day, I always take my mom out to breakfast. My parents owned a restaurant and thus the reason for going out vs. cooking at home. In fact, I don't think the stove at our house was ever used. One year, I greeted our waitress with a "Happy Mother's Day". My mom cracked up and couldn't stop laughing. I was 8 years old and very confused. Why not greet every girl I see to wish them a great day?

Turns out our waitress was 16 and had no kids.

I'm 25 now and my mom still thinks it's funny.
  • elaine
my first mothers' day was memorable-i was 4 months pregnant, we'd just moved from California to Vermont and just bought a house, but not move in yet. my husband gave me a key in a box to symbolize these HUGE milestones in our lives...ahh, memories!
  • When I was 6 or so, the first "breakfast in bed" I served my mom was on Mother's Day. I knew that it should be healthy, but I also knew that it was a special day, so there should probably be chocolate too. My mom ended up with lettuce tossed with M&Ms in a big mixing bowl and two spoons, so we could share.
  • Holly
This will be the 5th year since my mother died of lung cancer. I still miss her and every year at this time when Mother's Day presents begin to appear in the stores and in advertisements I unconsciously pick something out for my Mom. She always loved my knitting efforts and the last thing I made her was the Mariposa Shawl from SWTC but she unfortunately did not live long enough for the gift to be finished. Ultimately I gave the shawl to a dear friend who lost her son in a car accident. I have know this friend since 4th grade and she knew my Mother well and I believe she would have wanted a grieving mother to have the confort of a prayer shawl.
  • nova
My Mother's Day memories are of the things we would make our moms in elementary school (ie. homeade cards, gift certificates and plants).
  • Noemy
Becoming a Mom is the most perfect memory of Mother's memory I have.
I was really scared that my baby boy wanted to come to the world with only 34 week, such a hurry!
It all happened so fast and I was crying all time.
When I received that little package from the nurse, I was looking at my perfect little baby boy, the only thing I managed to say to my husband was: "He looks like a little dool".
    Best memory, perfect memory =D
  • MaryEllen
What a great contest! My favorite Mother's Day memory is a relatively recent one... The first year I lived in Philadelphia, my mom and my sister came down for a mother-daughter weekend. I had really been missing them since I moved. We went to the Mother's Day brunch at Longwood Gardens, did lots of shopping, and had a cheesesteak taste test.

Anna Jarvis, the woman behind the official establishment of Mother's Day, lived in Philly, and the famous Wannamaker dept store in Philly helped promote the day. There is a plaque near City Hall commemorating Jarvis, and we have some nice photos of us near the spot.

We try to have a mother-daughter weekend every year now, although it doesn't always fall on Mother's Day. A nice new tradition :)
  • Rosann
I have so many wonderful stories about Mother's Day. The very best is having my three son's and daughter-in-laws bring all 6 of my beautiful grandchildren . The little ones have the best time giving me their gifts, they are always so excited.
  • Kate
My memory is a fairly simple one and from my childhood ... I remember choosing a corsage for Mom with help from Dad and my two little brothers. She cherished it - I remember her keeping it in the refrigerator when she wasn't wearing it, to keep it fresh as long as she could.
  • Jen in NH
My best mother's day memory with my Mom happened two years ago. She'd mentioned to me a couple of times that she'd loved her Raggedy Ann doll when she was a kid, but didn't know what had happened to it. Well, I'm a firm believer that even grownup girls need an occasional doll or stuffed animal to hug, so for Mother's day I sent to her a 19" stuffed Raggedy Ann doll. However, it was running a little late (the vendor didn't have them in stock). So, I'm trying to let her know that a present is coming, without telling her what it was...and she kept asking me questions about it. I finally gave her the hint that it was a toy...and my 67 year old mother went somewhere I really didn't want her to go....she asked, in all seriousness....it's not an *adult* toy, is it? She actually wondered if I'd sent her a sex toy. I reminded her that I was in complete denial over my parents sex life...but it was a very funny phone call
  • OMG - I can only imagine! I hope she wasn't disappointed :)
  • Marty
One year my sons made me special presents. One of them made a wooden candle holder and the other one made a lovely cutting board. I still use both of their gifts to this day, and each time think of their special efforts to make my mother's day a happy one.
  • Anita
A memory of Mother's Day that I will always cherish is the last Mother's Day I got to spend with my mother. Her birthday was May 12th and every few years, Mother's Day would fall on her birthday. A very special day.
  • Lynn
My memory is one Mother's Day when my sisters and I made our Mom breakfast in bed. We didn't know how to work the coffee maker, so we made her instant coffee with hot water from the tap -- yum! My Mom liked her eggs over easy and her toast light. Well, we did our best, but she got burnt, scraped toast and eggs that you could barely get a knife and fork through. She ate it all cheerfully and made us feel like the best kids in the world. Only a Mother's love.....
  • Sarah
I remember many years of making bizarre breakfast in bed for my mom. She was always very gracious about it, but I have to wonder if she didn't toss or hide half of what we made when we weren't looking.

I'm looking forward to this Mother's Day -- I'm pregnant with my first child, and I am getting together with another pregnant friend for a little celebratory cake!
  • I always picked a bouquet of violets for my mom on Mother's Day. Those little purple flowers still make me think of her.
  • Lori
My three kids were young - maybe 3, 5, and 7 - and they made breakfast in bed. When the food was prepared, the lined up, youngest to oldest. They started the music, All You Need is Love (which opens with a kind of trumpet fanfare of sorts) and marched into my bedroom. The baby was holding a pillow like a ringbearer, and it had a crown on it. The middle child was also holding a pillow with a bunch of cards and handmade gifts on it. The oldest child brought up the rear, carrying the food. The music woke me up, and I'll never forget their smiles as they marched into my room in time with the music. I wore the crown, ate the bad food, read the cards, and felt like the luckiest mother on earth.
  • That is awesome!

Mom passed away in 2004, but my favorite memory of her was on the last Mother's Day that we spent with her. She had fallen that year at home on New Year's Day and fractured her knee. She had to have new knee replacement surgery that ultimately led to kidney complications and dialysis. Mom spent several months in a rest home for rehab, but my sister and I finally managed to bring her home in April. On one of our hospital visits, she commented to a secretary at rehab that she couldn't wait to go to her favorite restaurant. The secretary at first misunderstood her and thought that Mom was saying that she was giving up, but Mom corrected he by raving about her favorite restaurant and how she loved going out to lunch on Sundays with her two daughters. So that Mother's Day we took Mom to Hopkins Inn in New Preston, CT. She was so very happy on that day! On Mother's Day we usually end up now at Hopkins Inn
because we always feel our Mom's presence there and remember all of our Sunday lunches and shopping trips with our Mom.

One of my favourite Mother's Day memories is of when my grandparents used to visit in the spring. We'd usually go out to eat on Mother's Day (or the day before) with all of my grandparents. Mother's Day is still special now, but my mom always seems a bit sad that her mom's in a different province.

My favorite Mother's Day memory is from when my son was little (he's now 25!). He and his dad made me a lovely breakfast. Money being somewhat tight, I was more than pleased with my yummy breakfast & the beautiful handmade card that they gave me... but that wasn't all! They both proceeded to do an interpretive dance in my honor. It was so funny and sweet. I'll always remember it!
  • I'm just here to wish everyone luck and to say I'm so happy with the ballwinder and swift I won in the last giveaway. Thanks so much.

I hope this isn't a dup message, I've been having probs with the comp tonite. Sorry if it is.

My favorite Mother's Day memory is from the first year my stepfather G. was with us. He took little 7yo me shopping for Mom's present - at the local HARDWARE store. He picked up a plastic caddy/basket and filled the slots with sponges, dustcloths, spray bottles and scrub brushes, all for under $10 (it was a long time ago).

When I gave Mom the "present" she made the kind of fuss over it only a mother can make. Later the three of us went to brunch. At the end of the meal when G.took out his wallet to pay, Mom simply took it out of his hands, removed all the money and handed me everything except what he needed to pay the check. Taking my hand she said "C'mon honey, we're going shopping for a new dress for me and whatever you want. It'll be an early Father''s Day present for G."

    G. turned red, but knew better than to say anything. When he started to get up and join us, Mom said,"I think you have some house cleaning to do, don't you? We'll take a cab home.when we're done"

    G. never made that kind of mistake again, and to this day neither Mom nor I remembers what HE gave her that year! Momand I would love to share this package, this year. Thanks for the contest.
  • I think my best Mother's Day memory is from my very first Mother's Day as a mom--my oldest child is now 16. We lived in NYC at the time and I always ran a 5K race on Mother's Day. That year, my husband and 6-month old daughter were at the finish line cheering for me. It was the greatest gift!
  • My favorite moment was just spending time with my mom. She passed away in 2002 and there is not a day that I do not miss her. Mother's day used to be great but now I just want it to pass quickly. But I always call all of my relatives that are mothers and wish them a great day... all mothers deserve it.
  • My favorite Mother's Day memory is making pancake for my Mom with my Dad and brother. My Dad, brother, and I rarely did things together, so making pancakes together was not just a special moment for my mom but for the three of us too.

Well, you did say not so funny was okay. My mother used to cry every Mother's Day, because her mother died right around Mother's Day a few years before I was born (and right around the time my brother was born). I knew this as a kid, yet I still felt that if only I did something better--drew a nicer card, found the right present--I could make her happy. My mother died in the summer of 2007, and last year was my first Mother's Day as a motherless daughter. I am determined that I will not cause the same confusion for my own kids. I am grateful for each and every one of them--the third, my daughter, was born last fall and she will only know my mother through my own memories. I will not cry on Mother's Day, which, incidentally, I always feel is backwards. I'm so grateful to be a mother I feel like I should give the kids gifts, not the other way around. This year for Mother's Day I'm running away, with my husband & kids of course, to... Northampton!! The kids love the Carle Museum, and I, of course, love WEBS. Fun for all. And I think it will be good to be away from home that weekend.
  • Sounds like you've got a nice tradition in the making! Thank you for sharing.

Since I'm only a dog mom, I've got to tell a story about that. A couple years ago, when we'd had our third puppy just a few months, my husband decided it was time for me to celebrate Doggie Mommy Day. He got up early with the fur children, fixed breakfast, and let them run in and jump on the bed to wake me up...just like human kids will do. It was terribly sweet and made me feel somewhat maternal, anyway. They really are too much like children for me! :)
  • Before our boys were born we were the proud parents of Jordan Elkins - mutt extraordinaire. I know just how you feel.

When I turned 39(and had been married for 16 years), my husband and I decided to try to get pregnant. Thankfully,we were succesful, but of course given my age, we were always thinking about the "dangers" of having a late in life baby. Well, 3 months after turning 40, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. That Mother's day was incredible and 15 months later we welcomed another son into our family. Now every day is mother's day:))

This is about my sister who after treatment for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma stage 4 and a bone marrow transplant and after the birth and then passing of a daughter (two hours after her daughter's birth), my sister was in China to receive her daughter that she was adopting. This took place on Mother's Day 2004. So this Mother's Day it will be 5 yrs since she and her husband have had their daughter. This little girl is so loved and wanted that no one looks at her any different than she is my niece and my sister's daughter.

I love the mi-spa.com site and I commented.
  • What an incredible journey your sister has been through. I am sure Mother's Day is truly an incredible day for her and your family.
  • My best mother's day present was a hand-made card from my daughter calling me her hero.

    She is my hero.

I remember one Mother's Day when my husband was out of town and our 2 girls were in college. At church the pastor told us to turn and greet someone with a Happy Mother's Day. Our 14 year old son made his way over from the other side of the auditorium to give me a hug, which was very much not like him. Better than flowers any day!
  • As the mom of 8 and 10 year old boys I can totally relate. The 8 year old will still hold my hand and cuddle - even in public. The 10 year old not so much. A hug, in public at 14 is really special!
  • Wow that's an awesome prize!!!

My mommy memories are lots, as I have many moms - my real biological mom, my two aunts who I lived with for awhile, my MIL and my step-MIL who treated me as their own... But i think the most memorable Mother's Day will be this year, because by Halloween, I will be a mommy myself!
  • That's so awesome you had so many wonderfully supportive women in your life. Somehow I think your little boy or girl is going to have a pretty terrific Mom!

My best mother's day went like this: my son (then 6) and my daughter (about 8 months at the time) and I flew down to Santa Barbara (where my parents were living) to surprise my mother. My dad picked us up at the airport, and I called my mom (not telling her where we were) to wish her a happy mother's day. We were standing in their driveway. Right then, we rang the bell (she said "hang on, there's someone at the door"), and then she opened the door to see us standing there! The kicker was that she was in her bathrobe and she blurted out "I thought you were the plumber." Huh? "You answer the door in your bathrobe when you think it's the plumber?" Well, it was a plumbing emergency because my dad had poured rancid flour down the drain and it turned to glue and broke the disposal! It was a wonderful surprise. I will never forget the look on her face when she answered the door!
  • That's a very cool story - you and your dad did a great job!

When my sister and I were little girls, we always got up early and made a big elaborate breakfast for my mom on Mother's day. I think we probably made a big mess in the kitchen, but we felt like we were doing something good for her :)

I have to say I recall a mother's day when the kids were young and being horrible - It was however a beautiful day- I went out for what I consider the perfect lunch. I went for a walk to our local chocolate/gelato shop and got a cone. I walked around town and when I got back the kids were napping and the storm had passed! Perfect mother's day!

This is going to be so much fun reading everyone's memory. My favorite memory happened the year I thought none of the kids would be home. I was resigned but things came together and all but one was going to be there. This child was studying in Japan. It turns out that he had to leave Japan for some reason having to do his visa. (or something) All the other children picked him up at the airport and when they all crashed into the house he was in the middle of the bunch! I was totally surprised!
  • Bonney, what a great story! It must have been such a special day. I am also excited to read the responses. I will be posting my on Mother's Day itself, so everyone will have to stay tuned :)
