An Event with Carol Sulcoski and a Giveaway!

We have been loving Carol Sulcoski’s new book Sock Yarn Studio: Hats, Garments, and Other Projects Designed for Sock Yarn so when she agreed to hold a book signing event at WEBS on Saturday, November 10th, we were thrilled!

Carol is a talented designer, author and hand-dyer with a particular interest in light weight yarns. This book is filled with gorgeous projects to inspire knitters everywhere to use their colorful stashes of sock yarn for projects other than socks! There is also a handy section packed with information about how sock yarn works, how to best use self-patterning yarns and how to avoid pooling.

The beautifully photographed projects are the real stars of the show in this book. This Gumdrop Raglan pullover makes great use of both solid and striping sock yarns:

And, of course a staff favorite is the Fortunate Cowl by our very own Melissa Morgan-Oakes! Knit in Valley Yarns Charlemont Hand Dyed (in the colorway named for Melissa’s dog, Yoshi) this cowl is sure to help keep the chill away as the New England winter approaches.
In honor of Carol’s visit to WEBS, we are giving away one copy of Sock Yarn Studio!  To enter, just leave a comment on this post with the name of your favorite sock yarn. You have until Friday, October 19th at 9:00AM EDT. One winner will be chosen at random.

And don’t forget to register for the free Sock Yarn Studio event!  Carol will have lots of samples of the projects from the book, so you can see them up close, and she might even share a few tips on working with your favorite fingering weight yarns.

  • Deb

I would say Socks that Rock Lightweight is my favorite sock yarn, but I am anxious to expand my horizons and try a bunch of yarn from new dyers (including Carol) whom I’ve been hearing about. LOVE Carol’s “Knitting Socks with Handpainted Yarn,” so I would adore having this book to add to my collection.

  • Kim K

I’m a newbie so I don’t have a fav yet, but I’m going to check out some of these suggestions!

  • Linda R

Sock yarn is so versatile and comes in so many varieties, it’s hard to choose just one. I love the colors that indie dyer Bohemia Fibers creates and her superwash merino blend is so soft and squishy!

  • http://www.facebook.com/joan.wright.31 Joan Wright

My favorite yarn is a little local business, Yarn Candy, Sweet Fiber, and not only just for their sock yarn!

  • Sock2girl

What a nice pattern book for sock yarns. I would love o k it these patterns

  • Denise

I’ve just started knitting socks so don’t have a lot of experience with sock yarns. But so far, I like Blue Moon Fiber Arts socks that rock. I need to try new ones!

My stash is holding some malabrigo, smooshy, regia and some random hand painted end i’ve picked up along the way. Looking forward to trying tosh and lorna’s. Don’t have a favourite, just happy to be knitting.

  • Yarnwitch

Lorna’s laces, Tosh sock, Regia, all the fabulous indie dyers….I could go on. How could I possibly pick just one?? Isn’t that why we are sock knitters?? So we don’t have to pick just one favorite??? I love them all!!

  • cathy

I love all my sock yarn but my favorite is….drum roll please……OPAL.
great wearing easy to knit and always plenty of yardage…..but that’s only one….there are many more to love and cherish….in my stash already,,.

It’s a tie between Three Irish Girls and Colinette :)

  • kristi

I’ve just started knitting with sock yarn and I bought Smooshy with cashmere from Dream. It is sumptuously splendid! So the band says and I agree!

  • Ginny

Too many sock yarns are wonderful and there are many that I haven’t tried. I can’t pick a favorite. I’m always willing to try another sock yarn.

  • Robin Fremer

    Bugga!

  • Emily

Gorgeous patterns in this book. I’m not a sock knitter, but I do love sock yarn. Malabrigo is particularly soft and warm.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cary.guido Cary Guido

I love sock yarn and I collect lots of it. I also love to collect pattern books. It is so much fun matching a perfect yarn to the most wonderful pattern.

  • Jenny K

I’ve got lots of sock yarn in want of patterns.

  • Elizabeth

I have been doing some work with Cascade Heritage lately and think it’s just terrific for the price. For luxury sock yarn, give me Stonehedge Mill alpaca blend.

  • Beth

    I haven’t found a sock yarn that I don’t like!

  • mrspao

    Wollemeise!

  • Lynn

Wish I lived close enough to attend the event.
Love sock knitting and a favorite sock yarn is Opal.

  • Kay

Dream in Color Smooshy and Bugga and Mad Tosh and Lorna’s Laces and Dragonfly Djinn and…….

  • Karina

So far? (I’m sure there’s a sock yarn out there I haven’t tried yet that I’ll love just as much), Blue Moon Fiber Arts, Socks that Rock. Thanks for offering this, it looks like a great book.

  • Elizabeth S.

With an abundance of choices it is VERY difficult to pick one favorite stock yarn so I am just picking one at random: Solemate.

  • hotknitter on rav

That’s a tough question as there are so many nice sock yarns. I like many! Regia, Opal, indies, etc. I also like darker, jewel tones instead of the light, bright ones.

  • Ardosa Carboni

I am not sure I have a favorite yet… I am still trying new ones I find and having fun with it!

  • Jen Funk

I’d have to say my favourite is the ones given to me. When I look at the sock yarn I choose almost exclusively by colour. never by brand.

  • Andi Tippie

Hmmm, favorite sock yarn? Maybe Lorna’s Laces? Knits up so beautifully!! I just love it. but I have many that I’ve loved also. Art Yarns was spectacular and my one sock is just beautiful…. need to get crackin’ on that second one! :)

  • jungeun426

    Good old reliable Regia!

  • James

I honestly can’t pick a favourite sock yarn. Havne’t worked with enough, but my favourite thta I have worked with is probably Knit Picks Felici in Time Traveler. Yeah, I’m a proud Whovian.

  • Cathy k.

All of them! I have quite a fondness and purchase sock yarn almost as fast as I finish the last project made in that weight. My favorite Madelinetosh tosh merino light, it’s the perfect weight & softness for so many shawl patterns.

  • Jenn

I really love sock yarn! I think my favorite might be Lorna’s Laces….though for years I was a Koigu KPPPM fan!

  • sylphette

    Madelinetosh tosh sock!

Handmaiden Sea Silk is by far my favorite

  • Carmen Nuland

I don’t have much experience with sock yarn but one I really liked was Lorna’s Laces.

  • Hind DP

My favorite so far is Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light. I made a shawl with it over the summer, I love the softness and how pretty it looks knit up.

  • Knts_with_Raini

Crystal Palace Panda Silk is my favorite sock yarn. I like so many it is hard to pick just one.

  • http://scifiknitter.blogspot.com scifiknitter

For socks, I’m quite fond of the workhorse sock yarns like Regia. Very hardwearing and easy to launder! Beyond that, I’ve yet to meet a sock yarn that I didn’t like.

  • Janelle Wertzberger

“Favorite sock yarn” is clearly a trick question, as REAL knitters know you can’t pick just one! I have so many favorites… Cascade Heritage, Smooshy with Cashmere, Felici, Colortweed… and of course, “favorite” depends on whether you’re actually knitting socks or something else. You’re asking to drum out the REAL sock knitters, aren’t you?!? :)

  • Mollie

Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock is a favorite of mine for hand dyed sock yarn, but Trekking XXL is my favorite mass produced sock yarn for colors and it wears really well.

  • Marlene

Two favorites. Blue Moon Socks That Rock lightweight because of the colors!!! Regia because of the way it wears (hubby is hard on his socks). -Marlene

  • Sara

I have a couple… I’m a big fan of BMFA’s Socks that Rock. Anytime I’m in a funk, handling that sproingy, beautifully colored yarn cheers me up. I’m also in love with Pagewood Farm’s St. Elias because of the BFL. I also recently discovered DiC’s Everlasting. It has such gorgeous stitch definition! I’m plotting a sweater out of the heavy-weight version already.
