An Event with Carol Sulcoski and a Giveaway!

Share Button

We have been loving Carol Sulcoski’s new book Sock Yarn Studio: Hats, Garments, and Other Projects Designed for Sock Yarn so when she agreed to hold a book signing event at WEBS on Saturday, November 10th, we were thrilled!

Carol is a talented designer, author and hand-dyer with a particular interest in light weight yarns. This book is filled with gorgeous projects to inspire knitters everywhere to use their colorful stashes of sock yarn for projects other than socks! There is also a handy section packed with information about how sock yarn works, how to best use self-patterning yarns and how to avoid pooling.

The beautifully photographed projects are the real stars of the show in this book. This Gumdrop Raglan pullover makes great use of both solid and striping sock yarns:

And, of course a staff favorite is the Fortunate Cowl by our very own Melissa Morgan-Oakes! Knit in Valley Yarns Charlemont Hand Dyed (in the colorway named for Melissa’s dog, Yoshi) this cowl is sure to help keep the chill away as the New England winter approaches.
In honor of Carol’s visit to WEBS, we are giving away one copy of Sock Yarn Studio!  To enter, just leave a comment on this post with the name of your favorite sock yarn. You have until Friday, October 19th at 9:00AM EDT. One winner will be chosen at random.

And don’t forget to register for the free Sock Yarn Studio event!  Carol will have lots of samples of the projects from the book, so you can see them up close, and she might even share a few tips on working with your favorite fingering weight yarns.

Hmmm. I really have a couple of favorites. I love the sock I made out of Happy Feet. They feel like I am wearing slippers all day. I also love the Regia yarns for their all around robustness and variety. Thanks for the chance to win such a fabulous looking book.

I honestly don’t have a favorite sock yarn (yet). I’ve been on the hunt, for more than a year, for a hand-dyed semisolid (nearly solid, kettle-dyed) that comes in saturated hues and contains nylon (And honestly, I’d prefer it to not have 20 (or some huge number) of plies; I prefer squishiness to smoothness usually).

  33. Francesca Says:

    Malabrigo is so so soft!

  34. Kate Gray Says:

My favorite sock yarn was locally spun and dyed especially for a little yarn shop I visited on my honeymoon in Nelson, New Zealand. The colorway was called Rose Garden, and it was pink/yellow/green, and absolutely gorgeous. I made a pair of lace socks for my mother, and she adores them.

  111. Yarnwitch Says:

  126. ereader2012 Says:

With an abundance of choices it is VERY difficult to pick one favorite stock yarn so I am just picking one at random: Solemate.

  127. hotknitter on rav Says:

That’s a tough question as there are so many nice sock yarns. I like many! Regia, Opal, indies, etc. I also like darker, jewel tones instead of the light, bright ones.

  137. Cathy k. Says:

For socks, I’m quite fond of the workhorse sock yarns like Regia. Very hardwearing and easy to launder! Beyond that, I’ve yet to meet a sock yarn that I didn’t like.

  147. Janelle Wertzberger Says:

“Favorite sock yarn” is clearly a trick question, as REAL knitters know you can’t pick just one! I have so many favorites… Cascade Heritage, Smooshy with Cashmere, Felici, Colortweed… and of course, “favorite” depends on whether you’re actually knitting socks or something else. You’re asking to drum out the REAL sock knitters, aren’t you?!? :)

  148. Mollie Says:

Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock is a favorite of mine for hand dyed sock yarn, but Trekking XXL is my favorite mass produced sock yarn for colors and it wears really well.

  149. Marlene Says:

Two favorites. Blue Moon Socks That Rock lightweight because of the colors!!! Regia because of the way it wears (hubby is hard on his socks). -Marlene

  150. Sara Says:

I have a couple… I’m a big fan of BMFA’s Socks that Rock. Anytime I’m in a funk, handling that sproingy, beautifully colored yarn cheers me up. I’m also in love with Pagewood Farm’s St. Elias because of the BFL. I also recently discovered DiC’s Everlasting. It has such gorgeous stitch definition! I’m plotting a sweater out of the heavy-weight version already.

  151. Yarnwarrior Says:

Regia Silk 4-ply which, so unfortunately, has been discontinued. It is the best sock yarn I’ve found for withstanding the abrasion of my left big toe which sticks up and very quickly cuts through every other sock yarn I’ve tried. It must be the nylon/silk blend that add strength to the wool. Socks made in this yarn also machine-wash very well, and are soft too. I’m quite upset that it is disappearing.

  152. tinkgeek Says:

My favorites are Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock, and Fibernymph Dyeworks’ Bounce, because the colorways are gorgeous.

  153. Maryanne Maturo Wilford Says:
