Fiesta Free Scarf Pattern and Yarn Giveaway

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

We’re partnering with Fiesta over the next few months to provide you with a wonderful free pattern designed specifically for one of Fiesta’s yarns. This month, they’ve paired Fiesta Rayon Boucle with the Rayon Boucle Neck Warmer pattern.

This fairly simple scarf is knit in stockinette stitch until you reach the required length then work the ruffle end. Once you finish, you stitch together a few stitches at the opposite end to create a loop to pass the ruffle through.

You can wrap the scarf more than once as we have in our image, or you can let it hang so it’s longer. You could even leave it without the loop at the end and have a lovely scarf.

The featured color is Fiesta Rayon Boucle in wind surfer. This is a great, beachy color that reminds me of summer. We have several other colors of the yarn available too.

Would you like to knit this scarf? We’re giving away a hank of Fiesta Rayon Boucle in wind surfer. Just leave one (and only one) comment with your favorite beach activity and one winner will be chosen at random. Make sure that when you comment you include your email address so that we can contact you if you’re the lucky winner! Leave your comment by Friday, June 22, 2012 at 8:00am. We’ll announce the winner Friday morning here on the blog.

Eucalan Giveaway Winners

Hi Everyone!

The winner of the Eucalan Gift Pack is Kelly. Kelly’s tip was: “I just learned the easy way to wash my woolens (in washing machine with eucalan, soak overnight, spin in the morning, block/lay out to dry) and it was just.so.easy!  I love easy cleaning!  I also recently discovered the joys of 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 dish soap (the translucent, handwashing kind) as a cleaning spray for the tub/shower walls.  Spray on, leave for a bit, wipe off.”

And the winner of the Getaway Gang is Jasmine Liska. Jasmine’s helpful tip was: “Whenever I boil water for tea, I pour a bit of hot water onto the stove top to loosen the oil and whatnot that has spattered onto the stove.  It makes it a lot easier to clean!”

Please contact me at mkubasekDOThaberATyarnDOTcom with your contact information.

Thank you so much to everyone for sharing your cleaning tips. There are some wonderful tips in the comments, so if you haven’t already checked them out, make sure you do!

Happy Cleaning!

Eucalan Giveaway: Spring Cleaning in Four Scents

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

With Spring in full force, there has been lots of spring cleaning going on. It seems like every day more of us are bringing in selections from our own stash clean-outs to pass on. I’ve packed up most of my sweaters, but before that, they got a little bath in Eucalan.

Eucalan has shared with us a Gift Pack and Getaway Gang to give away to you, but more on that later.

If you’ve never tried Eucalan, it is a no-rinse delicate wash that is available in four scents: eucalyptus, lavender, grapefruit, and unscented. It is great for washing your woolens, but it has many more uses! From your delicate handwash clothes to drapery, it’s a wonderful cleaning product that you don’t have to rinse out (so it saves on water too).

Check out this introductory video from Eucalan for more information:

Now for the giveaway! One random commenter will receive a Eucalan Gift Pack that includes 3.3oz bottles of each of the four scents, and one random commenter will receive a Getaway Gang that includes a sample size of each scent, plus a small sewing kit, Eucalan Lint Remover Sheets, and Eucalan Stain-Treating Wipes.

Leave one comment with your favorite cleaning tip by May 14th at 2:00pm EDT when we will draw the winner. And don’t forget to check out Eucalan on Facebook and their blog!

Good luck!

Hi Everyone

Well, the exciting news just seems to keep on coming our way as of late! We are excited to share the latest with all of you!

Steve & I submitted a 2 minute video to the National Retail Federation’s contest titled “This Is Retail“. We’ve been notified that we are a top 20 finalist which is very exciting! Over the next three weeks there will be a series of voting opportunities that can result in us advancing to the next round. When its all said and done the top three voted videos will attend the NRF’s national conference in Washington, DC in May. The top retailer will win $25,000, 2nd place is $15,000 and 3rd is $10,000. Needless to say, we’d love to be in the top 3 but first we have to get past this first round of voting.

Here’s how the voting works:

  • Starting April 3rd at 12:01am through 11:59pm on April 8th, we will be paired against one other video. We won’t know who it is until voting begins at 12:01am on 4/3. We will go head to head in the voting and the top vote-getter will move onto the top 10.
  • Round 2 (4/9–4/15) is structured the same way – each of the top 10 videos will be paired against one other video and the top vote-getter in each pairing will move on to the next round (top 5).
  • Round 3 (4/17–4/22) is down to the top 5. There are no match ups at this level – just general voting and the top three will go to DC.
  • Each individual can vote up to 10 times per day and voters must be over the age of 13.
  • All of the details and the other 19 finalists can be found on the National Retail Federation’s website.
  • Voting happens at retailmeansjobs.com/vote.
  • You can log in with a Google, Yahoo or Facebook account to vote.
We’ll be posting about this on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
We don’t want to drive everyone nuts with reminders to vote but will do some nudging along the way.
Please pass this along, please vote for us each day (10x) and help us make it to the next round. Thanks in advance for all of your help & consideration!

Dream in Color March Givaway

Monday, March 26th, 2012

It is time once again to have another giveaway with one of Dream in Color’s lovely hand dyed yarns along with a beautiful shawl pattern. This month’s yarn is called Absolutely Marvelous, and it is absolutely marvelous! Kind of like the weather we have had over the past week here in Massachusetts!

The fiber is 50% silk, 50% wool, consists of shades of grey and there is a generous 1100 yards for your fingers to fly through to make the beautiful Vostok Shawl designed by Beth King.

I am a huge fan of shawls; they are probably one of my favorite items to knit other than socks. Watching my skein of yarn get smaller, but yet, not seeing the results until the end when it is time for blocking is just one big happy surprise. I am always so very proud of my shawls and rarely give them away, but when I do, the appreciation from the receiver of such a gift creates such a sense of accomplishment and pride!

One of my favorite shawl pattern books is Knitted Lace of Estonia by Nancy Bush. Not only do I want to make every shawl in this book, I also had the privilege of taking a couple of classes with Nancy when she taught here a few years back! That was quite a treat!

If you have never done a lace project, maybe it is time to give it a try! Just start with a simpler design, possibly a rectangular shawl, or even a lacey scarf, such as Fiber Trends Estonian Garden Shawl and Scarf. Once you knit something so beautiful, and watch the magic happen when you block it, you will be hooked!

So, tell us what some of your favorite shawl patterns are, or books! Do you enjoy the thrill and challenge of knitting such a piece?

Leave a comment below by 3/29/12, 11:59 pm EST to be entered into the March drawing for one skein of Dream in Color Absolutely Marvelous along with the Vostok shawl pattern. There will be 10 lucky winners! Be sure to check the blog on Friday 3/30/2012 to see if your name was picked. If you win, you will need to contact us by 4/3/12, otherwise we’ll have to find an alternate winner.

Good Luck!

Sweet Shawlettes Review

Hi Everyone,

We’re participating in the blog tour for Sweet Shawlettes by Jean Moss. At the end of the post, you’ll have a chance to win a copy of the book!

Sweet Shawlettes is the latest book by UK designer Jean Moss. It is a collection of 25 shawlettes, cowls, and scarves. You’re sure to find something you want to knit in this book.

Sweet Shawlettes is divided into four different categories – Country, Couture, Folk, and Vintage.

This book is full of impressive projects, many that don’t take a lot of knitting time. The black and white cowl above features shadow knitting, and I think that this project would be a great way to give it a try and get a finished project that has an incredible amount of impact.

You’ll find projects that span techniques and skill levels. From simple stockinette  to fantastic cables, lace, Fair Isle, and more, you have many options.

To win a copy of the book, please visit the project gallery for Sweet Shawlettes and come back here and leave a comment with what your favorite project from the book is. The winner will be chosen at random from the comments. Please comment by Friday, January 20th at 12:00pm EST. We’ll let you know the winner after that!
