This week Kathy talks with first time guest Ellen Gormley, crochet expert from Knit & Crochet Now! – check your local PBS station for availability.

Ellen talks about prepping for each season and the work that goes into presenting a project. Currently in it’s 4th season, Knit & Crochet Now! has a great mix of projects that range from beginner to advanced each season and features patterns and techniques from some of the industries top designers.

We have 2 copies of the Season 4 DVD to give away! Leave us a comment and tell us if you’re a knitter, a crocheter or both, by 11:59pm on Tuesday, Nov 27th. The winners will be announced the following Saturday, Nov. 30th.

This week Kathy talks with first time guest, Taiu Landra from Koigu.

Taiu tells the history of the company from it’s beginnings in the kitchen of the family farm, to the 5,000 sq. foot facility that they built in the early 00′s.

Her grandmother was a weaver and she learned to knit from her mother,  an artist, who had begun hand painting wool in their kitchen to match the yarn she imagined she wanted to knit sweaters from. They also discuss the creation of their colorways and how weather conditions can affect the dyeing process and why dye lots in hand-dyed yarns can vary so widely.

Kathy and Cirilia Rose discuss The Fiber Factor, Skacel‘s Knitwear Designer Competition that has just entered the Final Challenge stage.

They discuss the goals of the contest, the different challenges and short turn-around times as well as some of the design work. Bravura designed by Tracey Purcher has been one of the most popular patterns from the contest!

This week Kathy talks with Barbara Parry about her new book Adventures in Yarn Farming.

Kathy and Barbara talk about her humble beginning with 2 sheep in her small suburban backyard to owning and managing a large flock at Springdelle farm as well as goats, cows, and a llama. The book contains patterns written and knits using yarns produced from her flock as well as a chapter on her kitchen garden and recipes.

The book follows the ebb and flow of the seasons in New England and the challenges and rewards that each bring to the farm.

Join us at WEBS the evening of November 14th from 6:30 -8pm to meet Barbara Parry and buy your own signed copy of her new bookBarbara will do a short presentation about her farm and life with sheep including beautiful pictures of her flock and farm. Kathy and Sara discuss the October KAL/CAL happening in the All Things WEBS group on Ravelry, this month’s theme is Stuffed Toys.

Details
What are we making?: knit and/or crocheted stuffed toys
What’s the timeline?: Begin anytime in October, post your finished pictures in the October KAL/CAL Entry thread by 10/31 at noon Eastern.
What’s the prize?: One randomly selected entry will be chosen and will receive a $50 WEBS gift card.

Rules

  • Must be a member of the All Things WEBS group.
  • Must be a stuffed animal (or monster, doll, etc.) – knit or crocheted (or both).
  • Must cast on October 1st (or after) and finish by October 31st at noon Eastern.
  • Must include a photo of the finished object in the KAL/CAL Entry thread. Only one entry (post) per project, but you can enter with more than one project. Just create a new post with the picture.
  • We encourage you to use a yarn (and/or) pattern that you’ve purchased from us, or one that we carry (your handspun is okay too), but it isn’t required.
  • We will lock the thread at noon Eastern on October 31st and the winner will be chosen randomly and posted the next day.

The Cover Sweater from our Fall 2013 Catalog has been hugely popular and has cleared out ALL stock of the yarn available in the US! WOW! Noro has actually put this one yarn color at the top of their production list because of your demand! and new shipments of Obi color #05 should be in stock by mid-November. If you don’t mind the wait, feel free to place an order for this color that will remain on back order until it is restocked, or check out some of the other color selections in the Obi yarn.
