You do need at least on good stitch dictionary – here are some greats:

Don’t be afraid of crochet charts, they are easy to learn and very easy to read. It’s definitely worth learning how to read them!

Crochet edgings are useful and varied. You should have at least one good book on crochet edgings, especially knitters!
