Hi Everyone,

Our last Show and Tell of the Year is 437 Loire Cardigan. Made from the bottom up with seamlessly integrated set-in sleeves, this flattering and lacy little cardigan is full of thoughtful touches.

This cardigan is knit in Valley Yarns Northampton Bulky, so it is a super quick project! Northampton Bulky is a soft 100% wool that comes in a wonderful selection of colors.

We tried on the 36.”

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“Boom! Super flattering. Might even be a little TOO flattering. I’d consider making a size larger, but I’d probably end up making just this size instead.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“The detailing on the front of this sweater is one of my favorites. It’s subtle and compliments the design of the sweater perfectly. I would need to make the next size up but I love this sweater.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“I really like the fitted shape of this cardigan, and the sleeve length hitting me right below my elbows. I would change the placement of the buttons so that the top button is hitting at the widest part of my chest so that there wouldn’t be the gaping of the button band there.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“I’m usually not a fan of bulky sweaters, but this one is quite nice. I might knit it at a bit of a looser gauge to give a little more room because I don’t think the next size up would fit as well. I’m a fan of 3/4 sleeves. When I took Amy Herzog’s Fit to Flatter class, one of the suggestions was 3/4 sleeves that hit at your narrowest point because your eye will automatically go there.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“Knitting the next size up in this garment would make it great for me! I like the V-neck, the length of the sleeves and the big buttons are fun. I also like the contrast between the bulky yarn and the lace panels.”

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“I’m a big fan of this sweater. The snug fit and shortened sleeves accentuate my waistline and the cropped style is really flattering to my body. I might make one size larger.”

We hope you’ve enjoyed the Show and Tell. We’ll have another one when our Spring catalog and new collection of Valley Yarns patterns comes out.

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 439 Fleur de Sel Cardigan

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Hi Everyone,

This week’s show and tell has us taking a look at 439 Fleur de Sel Cardigan. Worked side-to-side this easy crocheted lace cardigan has wide overlapping front panels with a flattering square neckline. The lace pattern is just one row so its easy to memorize, and the mostly double crochet sleeves keep the project moving quickly.

Worked in Valley Yarns Northfield, this cardigan is warm, even with the airy lace pattern.

We tried on the 36.”

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“Super cute and pretty sweater, but I think I’d make the neckline a little smaller to keep it on my shoulders better.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“I’m always looking for more crocheted sweaters that are attractive. And this is definitely getting added to my queue. The open square neckline is awesome. And you can adjust the buttons to get more of a custom fit where it matters.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“I didn’t think I would like the way this looked on me when we were shooting it for the catalog, but it doesn’t look too bad. I don’t know if the style of the closure really suits my shape, but the Nortfield felt fantastic.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“It’s cute in theory, but I’m not a fan of this sweater.”

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“I’d definitely need a larger size so that the cardigan closes properly. I really like the stitch of this sweater and the square neckline, which would showcase a necklace beautifully. Again, I would change the sleeve length so that the sleeves didn’t fall at my widest point.”

Next week we have our final Show and Tell of the year!

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 433 Provence Coat

Hi Everyone,

Today we are showing off 433 Provence Coat. The subtle shades of lavender and wheat fields work harmoniously in this soft and lofty coat. Ribbing provides waist shaping and straight sleeves provide gentle flair.

It is knit in Valley Yarns Cold Spring. Cold Spring is a light, lofty yarn that very subtly shifts its color in tonal shades.

We tried on the 36.”

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“So soft and light! I could probably raise the ribbing an inch or two so it’s centered on my waistline.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“This is a great jacket, and I love the yarn. It’s warm but light, it’s just way too long for me! Even if I made it shorter, I think a taller person would look a lot better in a jacket like this.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“I prefer to wear shorter sweaters. Plus having pockets that hit me at the sides of my hips is not wear I would put them for me.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“This was a comfortable jacket, but I might knit it in all one color. I’d also like it to have some sort of closure because I can see it flapping open as I walk and I worry that would bug me.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“I was a bit skeptical of this one at first, but once I got it on, I could picture myself wearing it curled up on the couch with a good book in the middle of winter. It is cozy, and has good deep pockets.  I would make this size for myself, it has a bit of positive ease built in, but I might opt for making the sleeves a bit shorter.”

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“Though not my style, I think this coat is super cute! I’d lengthen the sleeves, but other than that I think it fits nicely.”

Next week we’ll check out the crocheted Fleur de Sel Cardigan!

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 434 Aquitaine Coat

Hi Everyone,

Today we are featuring 434 Aquitaine Coat. This crocheted coat is super cozy! The rich shades of stone and wine make for a cozy and versatile crocheted coat. Front post stitches create ribbing at the edges and waist, while easy double crochet makes up the main body.

Valley Yarns Cold Spring is the newest addition to our Valley Yarns line. It features subtle color shifts and works up at 4 stitches per inch. Cold Spring is airy yet warm and perfect for a coat like this.

We tried on the 36,” but as you can see, it does stretch.

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“As light and lofty as Cold Spring is, this crocheted coat still stretched a lot. I think I’d leave out the waist band all together and sew the pockets higher up – after it’s blocked and stretched to its natural length, that is.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“This coat is obviously way too big on me! I’m 5 feet tall and this went down past my knees. I love the coat, but long coats just aren’t quite right for my short frame. It would make a great gift for a taller friend!”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“This is way too much sweater for me. The wide stripe that wraps around my hips is not how I want to bring attention to the widest part of my body. If I was to make this sweater, I would take out about 8″ above the stripe, raising it to hit me at my waist. And I would make the smaller size.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“This jacket is far too long for me and too big, but it was super comfortable! I would definitely move the dark stripe up so it doesn’t hit at my widest point. And the sleeves are rolled, so they were a bit too long.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“This was very cozy but way too long for my short frame!  If I made it much shorter, this would be a fun outerwear piece for fall.  I would knit this size, I thought the shoulders and chest fit well.  A shawl pin would be a nice way to close it up in the front.”

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“This coat is surprisingly lightweight but I feel a little swallowed up by it. I would move the stripe up higher so that it doesn’t fall right on my hips. I’d also lengthen the sleeves so that the cuffs hit a little lower. This would be a great item to curl up in.”

Next week we’ll look at the knit version of this coat!

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 429 Farmer Brown Pullover

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Hi Everyone,

In today’s Show & Tell we feature 429 Farmer Brown Pullover. The fun, cuff-to-cuff construction, combined with stripes and a garter stitch yoke, creates an easy to wear pullover that’s both rugged and cute. Cozy Berkshire Bulky makes this a great sweater for staying warm in fall, winter and spring.

Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky is a cozy blend of wool and alpaca that works up quick. With many color options, you can choose your favorites and personalize this sweater.

We tried on the 36.”

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“Love love love this sweater. Very cozy and warm – perfect for wearing as an outer layer through late fall, maybe even for shoveling snow in winter. I may have to make one for myself.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“This is a great warm and comfortable sweater, but I didn’t think the garter stitch on top was very flattering on me. I would make the top in plain stockinette stitch instead to break up the horizontal lines but make the sweater a little more streamlined for me.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“I was shocked that a bulky sweater with horizontal stripes could actually look good on me. Maybe it’s because of the proportions of the textured yoke with the stripes below. Plus the fitted silhouette helps too.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“I think Kirsten designed this sweater to be loose and comfortable and it is more form-fitting on me. I would like it better if it was looser. I like the way the vertical lines of the garter stitch play off the horizontal lines of the two colors of yarn.”

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“I like the feel of this pullover but it doesn’t look so great on my body. The garter yoke hits me in the wrong place on my bust line. I would also make a slightly larger size as this sweater shows off a little more than I’m comfortable with.”

Next week, we try on 434 Aquitaine Coat.

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 428 Bordeaux Pullover

Hi Everyone,

This week we begin a look at the garments from our holiday catalog. Have you checked it out yet? There are some fantastic gift ideas in there!

We’re starting with 428 Bordeaux Pullover. Occasional cables create spots of opacity in this sheer and light-weight top-down raglan pullover.

This pullover is knit in Valley Yarns 2/10 Merino Tencel. This is a lace version of our staff-favorite Colrain. It comes on cones, so your don’t have to worry about joining new balls, just keep knitting straight from the cone! The coned yarn also means this is an affordable project. Just one cone for all of the sizes!

We tried on the 36″

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“Totally love this sweater. I think it’s just my style. I like the cropped body length with the long sleeves.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“I really love how this sweater feels. 2/10 Merino Tencel is perfect for next-to-skin sweaters with no itchiness. The lace fabric stretched to fit me just right. This could be one of those sweaters where I could dress it up or down. I would normally never choose this plum color, but was surprised by how much I liked the color too.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“I would knit this in a larger size and also quite a bit longer. I do love layering, so I like the idea of this sweater but it would definitely be more flattering in a larger size. I’d knit it at least 3″ longer, but that’s the great thing about top-down sweaters! The 2/10 Merino Tencel feels great!”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“This pullover would be a wonderful layering piece for transitional seasons.  For myself I would knit it two sizes larger.  I would want it to be flowy and drapey. I would like this to be longer as well, but I think that going up in size would help with the length of this on me.”

Come back next week for another Show & Tell!

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 422 Rose Tweed Cardigan

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Hi Everyone,

Our final look from the fall catalog is 422 Rose Tweed Cardigan. This cozy, bottom-up cardigan uses a half brioche stitch instead of fairisle to create a color pattern at the yoke. It also serves to make the cardigan extra warm, perfect for fall and spring outerwear.

The wool and alpaca blend of Valley Yarns Berkshire will keep you toasty, and with over 40 colors, you can create your own combination from your favorites.

We tried on the 36.”

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“I like the sleeve length, but I think the round-yoke shape rounds and minimizes my shoulders too much.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“I love this sweater! It’s really soft and a great shape. I love the cut off sleeves and the neckline detail. This would make a great addition to my fall/winter wardrobe.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“What a warm sweater with great texture and with the cute yoke detail. But because this is a bulkier sweater, I would prefer the sleeves to be full length which would be easy enough to adjust.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“This sweater is a winner! I loved it when we did the photoshoot with bright pink underneath, and it looks nice with the gray outfit I had on the day we took the pictures (and I didn’t plan that!). I quite like where the sleeves end too since Berkshire is such a warm yarn.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“I love this cardigan. The patterned yoke lends itself perfectly to buttoning on the top two or three buttons – my favorite way to wear cardigans. It is cozy, and I like the bit of negative ease this size gave me. I might opt to make the sleeves full-length. “

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“I was pleasantly surprised by this cardigan. I like the interesting stitch and I found the fit to be rather flattering. I would probably make this size but I would either shorten or lengthen the sleeves so that they don’t end near the widest point of my body.”

Next week, we’ll start showing off the designs from our holiday catalog!

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 419 Silverscape Cardigan

Hi Everyone,

Today’s Show and Tell is 419 Silverscape Cardigan. It features art nouveau lace sprays on the front, back and cuffs. The shape of the lace is built into the neckline, and a simple single crochet edge creates a clean line.

It is knit in Valley Yarns Stockbridge. Stockbridge is a lovely worsted weight blend of wool and alpaca.

We tried on the 36″ size.

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“So sweet and flattering. I’d make the sleeves shorter, though.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“I love the color of this sweater, but I didn’t think the flare at the bottom was very flattering.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“This is a really comfortable cardigan to wear. I like the fitted sleeves, but would take off just a bit of the length of them.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“I really love this sweater! I love the eyelet lace detail the color. I actually knit myself a sweater in this color of Stockbridge a few years ago. I think I might try a different yarn though because I’m pretty sensitive to alpaca and I could feel it in this sweater.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“This cardigan is a nice length, and the detail at the shoulders is lovely. I would knit the size larger for myself, so that there was a bit more ease, but I would shorten the sleeves, which could be easily done in the simple stockinette.”

Here’s a shot of the back of the cardigan so you can check out the lace detail there as well.

Next week, we’ll look at the last garment featured in the fall catalog – 422 Rose Tweed Cardigan.

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 416 Dylan Cardigan

Hi Everyone,

This week we’re taking a look at 416 Dylan Cardigan. Our office is frequently visited by employees’ dogs, and Liz’s golden retriever Dylan (who makes a cameo in Liz’s picture!) loves making the rounds, putting a smile on everyone’s face. Just like Dylan, this top-down raglan sleeved cardigan is easy-going and quick to become your next best friend.

Knit in Valley Yarns Colrain, it is super comfortable, not at all itchy and has a slight sheen.

We tried on the 36″ size.

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“Love how soft and comfy this sweater is. I could make the sleeves shorter, but I also like how they look cuffed.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“This was a really nice and comfortable cardigan. I would make it the next size up to make it roomy and more of a weekend sweater.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“This has a fun striped texture. I’d take off a little length from the sweater and choose a different color, otherwise this is a sweater I could see wearing.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“I’m a huge fan of cardigans and would probably wear them every day if I had enough to do so. I like the way the lines look on this cardigan. The sleeves are just a touch too long, though I do like my sleeves on the long side. I would knit this, but in a different color of Colrain, which reminds me, I have some Colrain in my stash!”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“I love the slight bit of sheen the Colrain yarn has. This is a great weekend cardigan and would be nice with jeans. I would make the arms a bit shorter for myself, but I would consider sticking with this size, maybe adding a bit of ease in the body, since I like to wear cardigans buttoned only at the top. “

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“I LOVE this cardigan, and not just because its named after my dog. It is super comfortable to wear, even over just a tank top. It is form fitting but not so snug that you get self-conscious. And the design allows for easy modifications to fit a variety of bodies.”

Come back next week for another Show and Tell.

Valley Yarns Show & Tell: 421 Pearl Street Cabled Pullover

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Hi Everyone,

In this week’s show and tell, we try on 421 Pearl Street Cabled Pullover. It is knit in super soft Valley Yarns Amherst. It’s knit in the round from the bottom-up with seamless, wide saddle shoulders and easy ribbon cables.

We tried on the 36″ size.

Kirsten
Height: 5’3″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 42″

“This is one cuddly, warm sweater. I think I have slightly narrow shoulders, so the saddle shoulder helps accentuate them to make my figure less pear-shaped.”

Grace
Height: 5’0″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 30″
Hips: 38″

“This was way too much sweater for me! It’s a gorgeous cable pattern in a super soft and warm yarn, but it made me look a lot bigger than I am. I would make this sweater as a gift for someone else, but not for myself.”

Dena
Height: 5’4¾”
Bust: 35½”
Waist: 29½”
Hips: 40″

“I love cabled sweaters, but this one has a little too much cable action going on. But in a darker color and an inch off of the sleeves, this is a sweater I would put on when I want to feel cozy and warm.”

Mary
Height: 5’4″
Bust: 39½
Waist: 32″
Hips: 43″

“Amherst is one of my favorite Valley Yarns because it’s so soft, but I don’t think the style of this sweater is very flattering on me. The cable makes me look bulkier than I would like to.”

Tina
Height: 5’2″
Bust: 40″
Waist: 33½”
Hips: 43″

“If you are going ice skating this winter, this is the sweater you’ll want to wear! The cables in this wool yarn make this a very insulated, cozy, garment. I would knit the 44″ size (in a darker color) and use it as a layering/outerwear sweater paired with jeans.”

Liz
Height: 5’7 ½”
Bust: 36¾”
Waist: 34¾”
Hips: 38½”

“This sweater is very warm and cozy. It would be perfect for a crisp fall day. Its body-hugging but it smoothes over all of my problem areas. I really like the long sleeves, as they look just right on my long-ish arms.”

Next week, we’ll be featuring 416 Dylan Cardigan.
