Valley Yarns Show & Tell

Hi Everyone,

Here’s another edition of our Valley Yarns Show & Tell. We’ve added comments from the wearers this time, as requested.

This time around we’re showcasing Valley Yarns #327 Sojourner Cardigan. This cardigan was designed by Dena Childs (one of our models for today). She created the first version of the cardigan as her capstone project in our WEBS Expert Knitter Program (a program we do in the store for local customers). The original was designed in a sportweight, but Dena translated it into the super soft, Valley Superwash DK.

The Sojourner Cardigan has bell detail at the sleeves and flares below the waist. It is knit in one piece from the bottom to the armholes. There is great cable detail at the waist and before the sleeves flare.

It is sized for 33.5,” 37,” 40.5,” 44,” 47.5,” and 51.” We tried on the 37.”

And now, onto our show and tell!

Dena

  • Height: 5’4 ¾”
  • Bust: 35 ½”
  • Waist: 29 ½”
  • Hips: 40″

Dena’s comments on the sweater: “Since this sweater was based on my Expert Knitter final project, it’s a sweater that I originally designed for me. So there isn’t a lot I would change. I love the cable detail around the waist and prefer to have sweaters that come in at the waist on me. I also like how the bottom of the sweater glides over my hips and doesn’t pull in at all. If I was to make this sweater again, I’d consider going down a needle size for the waist, sleeves, and bodice so it’s a little more fitted in these areas.”

Next up is Kirsten!

  • Height: 5’3″
  • Bust: 35″
  • Waist: 28″
  • Hips: 41″

Here’s what Kirsten has to say about the cardigan: “I would probably make a smaller size. But, even though it’s a beautiful sweater, I don’t think I’d make it for myself, since I don’t think I look good in such a deep v-neck or in sweaters with lots of shaping.”

And Nicole.

  • Height: 5’3″
  • Bust: 34″
  • Waist: 28″
  • Hips: 38″

Here are Nicole’s thoughts (she works on our bead site and doesn’t knit or crochet…yet…): “Not being a knitter, I can only speak from a style standpoint. I would have loved the sweater even more if the bottom had a bit more of a flare to it and the V neck was slightly less wide.”

Heidi

  • Height: 5’4 ¾”
  • Bust: 36″
  • Waist: 30″
  • Hips: 40″

“I was impressed that this sweater looked good on so many body types especially with the lovely detail at the waist.  It was a nice combination of being comfortably loose and yet flattering.  If I were to knit it for myself, I would make the same size.  It’s nice to have a 37” option in a sweater – a standard 36”, for me, can sometimes be a bit small after it is washed.”

Here’s the sweater on me, Mary.

  • Height: 5’4″
  • Bust: 41 ½”
  • Waist: 36″
  • Hips: 45 ½”

I would knit the next size up on this cardigan so it would fit better all over, but especially in the arms. I would also lengthen the bottom part one or two inches to help balance things out on my body a little better. I love the cable at the waist!

Tina

  • Height: 5’2″
  • Bust: 40″
  • Waist: 33 ½”
  • Hips: 46″

Tina’s Comments: “I liked the fit of the sweater at the shoulders, but this size was a bit too small for me in the waist and hips.  Since I don’t tend to wear cardigans that button low (I like to button one or two buttons at the neckline.) I would consider leaving off the buttons entirely and wear it as an open layering piece. Instead of having a fitted upper sleeve that bells out at the cuff, I might increase the upper arm stitches to match the width of the cuff for a less dramatic effect.”

We hope you’ve enjoyed checking out the Sojourner Cardigan. Are there any specific garments you would like to see next?

I LOVE seeing items on different body types like this; there is no better way to figure out if it will fit me, or someone I know.

This was a fabulous page– I learned a lot and really appreciate seeing the sweater on a variety of body types. Many thanks!!!!

I really like that you showed the sweater on several different people

Can’t add much to what has already been said. I love seeing the sweater on different body types and seeing what changes the wearer would make to the original pattern. It is so helpful to have a better idea of a design than just seeing an ideal model picture and trying to guess how it would look on me with my full arms and large hips. This is a terrific feature!
